The Seattle Seahawks entered the NFL as an expansion team in 1976. They initially joined the NFC but were reassigned to the AFC West just one year later. The Seahawks remained in the AFC West from 1977 to 2001 before rejoining the NFC West in 2002.
They are the only NFL team to switch conferences multiple times since the AFL–NFL merger in 1970.

Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald joined the team in 2024. He had not previously held an NFL head coaching position, despite defensive success under John Harbaugh with the Baltimore Ravens.
In his first season with the Seahawks, Macdonald led Seattle to a 10–7 record but missed the NFL playoffs. Following that season, the Seahawks traded Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders and signed Sam Darnold as their starting quarterback.

Steve Largent was a late-round draft pick in 1976 and went on to have a 14-year career with the Seahawks. He earned seven Pro Bowl selections and First-Team All-Pro honors in 1985. When Largent retired in 1989, he held six all-time NFL receiving records and became the first player to record 100 career touchdown receptions. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1995.
Walter Jones spent 12 seasons with Seattle and was a nine-time Pro Bowler and four-time First-Team All-Pro. He started every game from 1997 to 2008 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014.
